They did indeed succeed in inflicting heavy losses on the Muslims in Uhud, but this did not discourage the Muslims at all! On the contrary, they only worked even harder to invite people to Islam. Since the idolaters had failed to destroy the Muslims, they now allied themselves with many other tribes to attack the Muslims in Madinah with a massive army.
